She stood before the full–length mirror, admiring the reflection of a woman about to present herself to the world. Trembling hands fumbled with the string of tiny white pearls. Each orb was a reminder of defeated obstacles. They were a collection of memories, trapped for her sanity; protection for a fragile and battered mind. It was a necklace which represented a heart stronger than the pain it had endured. Those small pearls gave the world a soul who smiled because life was an adventure worth experiencing and anyone could rise from the ashes, liberated and renewed from the torment of another’s choices.
Eyes of wisdom beyond their years reflected the strength of the woman standing tall in the mirror. There was no perfection in what was revealed, but there was an acceptance for who she had been and who she would be in time. A knowing smile tugged at her lips for an innocence long lost, but there was not a drop of remorse left upon them. The heart knew everything had happened for a reason, bringing her to this point in time. A new woman had been born from the past, and she was never going back. She was where she wanted to be; where she was supposed to be, and that was her victory.

Most days, I keep him chained deep
where he can't touch me.
Today, he claws
at the lining of my stomach,
pounds on the walls of his cage,
tears me apart from the inside
because that's all he can reach
but it's still too much.
Most days, I tell myself
the past is passed
and he can't hurt me
if I don't let him
but sometimes the wind
blows in from the south
and rips down the dam
and I'm left
in ruins.

Do you know why its a bad idea for ships to travel side by side over the sea?
They sat side by side, husband and wife, not touching. She sat perched on the edge of the sofa, as though she was scared to come into contact with anything solid. He, on the other hand, lay so far back that he was almost flat, as though hoped that the cushions would swallow him. He was wrapped in a blanket (he was always cold these days) whereas she just looked cold. Not as if she was cold, but as if she radiated it, as though it was some sort of negative heat. Neither of them looked at each other. They both acted as though the TV was their entire world.

Overall Vision Originality
Technique ImpactA great deal of mystery is created behind the character which gives a powerful urge to read on, to want to know more. Her history is left to the imagination of the audience - her past may be thought of as brave and noble, or as consisting of something darker - depending on the reader's perception.
The embodiment regarding the necklace is a good technique and the idea of it being a protection for her fragile mind is captivating. This is particularly so because it suggests the pearls came on by one - 'a collection of memories'
Again, I want to mention the possibility of her being a good or bad person. The impression is given that she has been through painful, tough times and overcome difficulties. But later she is described as an 'innocence long lost' with no remorse who has won a victory. It all adds to the mystery of her past and creates suspense.
Overall, this is a mysterious piece that beckons the reader to know more. It is well written and strongly descriptive.
